The Colonnade at the University of Utah

The Offices of Student Affairs and Undergraduate Studies are working to raise funds to renovate Building 605 in historic Fort Douglas to create “The Colonnade at the University of Utah”, a building that will house two wings: “The Honors House at the Colonnade” and “The Welcome Center at the Colonnade”. This building is envisioned as the centerpiece of student life for both entering and current students at the university. It will become the gem in the center of an academic village created by the restoration of Fort Douglas, with student housing to its immediate east, the Lassonde Student Center to the north, the Honors Center to the southwest, Chapel Glen to the west, and the Honors Houses on Officer’s Circle to its south. When complete, the Colonnade will become the new front door for every prospective student and parent at the University of Utah.

The two wings of the Colonnade will house the Office of Student Recruitment and High School Services as well as provide additional meeting and classroom space for the Honors College. Thousands of prospective students, parents, high school counselors, and other campus visitors will utilize the Center each year to connect with the University of Utah. Visitors will begin and end their visit to campus at the Center, thus providing the first and last impression of our beautiful community. The Colonnade will also provide much needed programming space that can accommodate events for larger groups of prospective and current students.

A unique feature of the Center is the shared space with the Honors College, allowing prospective students an opportunity to see classes in this learning community in action without having to leave the building. The new Honors Center at Fort Douglas first opened in 2004, but is already in critical need of additional space due to the program’s expansion. Honors students represent the top 10 percent of undergraduate students at the university and about 20 percent of the incoming freshman class. In addition to recruiting the best students in the region, the Honors College gives students powerful reasons for staying at the university and graduating with the Honors degree.
