Elevating Our Research

The world around us is changing at an astonishing pace, and the issues facing society are vast. Because the answers to few, if any, of those issues will fall within a single academic discipline, our faculty members and researchers are actively exploring creative solutions by intently studying ideas that not only span but also crisscross traditional academic boundaries.

These collaborations allow different kinds of knowledge—of the sciences and engineering, the arts, the humanities, the law, of medicine and nursing—to guide and influence how our scholars, teachers, and artists pursue their individual interests in the context of a broader intellectual panorama.

This, in turn, encourages unconventional approaches to teaching and research that allow University of Utah faculty and researchers—and the students they teach—to frame questions and offer potential solutions in bold new ways. Finding answers to important questions about human conflict, disease prevention and treatment, interactive technologies, sustainable development, and all the other complex issues facing us today will have measurable social and economic impact on our community, our state, and our world.

Support for faculty, in the form of endowed chairs and professorships, brings some of the world's most brilliant minds to our laboratories, studios, and lecture halls. It supports our ability to bring the best high-tech medical and research teams to the University through the Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR) initiative.

Funding for student research opportunities and entrepreneurial studies allows undergraduates as well as more experienced students to work alongside our master teachers and performers and to learn directly from them the value of scholarly collaboration and community. Through collaboration and community—crossing disciplines and distances—we have the potential to transform our lives today and the lives of our children tomorrow.
