Expanding Our Global Outlook

Our students and faculty are members of a vast scholarly community that quite literally spans every continent on the planet. Technology allows that community to create and share information with unprecedented intensity, volume, and speed. Because the world's most pressing problems don't stop at the border of any nation, it is increasingly important for our students and faculty to participate actively in global networks and to have increased access to international researchers, businesses, and government agencies.

It is also important for our campus community to reflect the internationalization of our teaching, research, and service missions. International students and faculty bring a rich panorama of diverse social and cultural traditions as well as different life experiences and expectations to their classrooms and laboratories. Their time at Utah broadens their horizons as well as the social and cultural horizons of the students and faculty with whom they live and work.

Gifts that support interdisciplinary centers focused on specific geographic regions of the world will open the door to broad ranges of new scholarly research. Gifts to fund scholarships and fellowships for international students will provide them with opportunities to work alongside our faculty and researchers and, consequently, to create new opportunities for international collaboration.

And gifts that enhance language study, international research, service, and study-abroad experiences will give University of Utah students opportunities to live, work, and solve problems with new people in new places. Every student who has lived abroad brings back a deeper understanding of life. When they share their transformational experiences with their peers, their families, and their communities, we all benefit.
