Honors Initiatives

A prestigious centerpiece of undergraduate education at the University of Utah since 1961, the mission of the Honors College is to provide excellence in undergraduate education for highly motivated students and to create distinctive educational opportunities focused on the values of interdisciplinary learning, diversity of ideas and civic engagement.

Challenging Academics

The Honors core curriculum challenges students to do their best thinking and learning deeper and more independent understanding, and quality research. The Honors thesis, or Capstone Project, is the culmination of students’ undergraduate education and represents their production of new knowledge alongside scholar professors.

Engaging Community

The Honors College enhances the undergraduate experience through a suite of Engaged Learning experiences: the Honors Think Tanks, the Honors Forums, and the Honors Scholars Program (Community Leadership, Global Health, Social Justice, Legal Scholars and Rosenblatt Scholars). These programs take students outside traditional classrooms and bring Honors students together with powerful mentors from both campus and the community inviting them to confront key societal issues and questions of our time.

Preparing for Life

The Honors Center at Fort Douglas locates the Honors community in a place, contributing to the creation of meaningful identity and interaction between students, faculty and community partners, and reinforces the focus on collaborative or community-based learning. The Honors Living and Learning Experience gives students a small college experience in the midst of a large research university, maximizing the advantages of both. These experiences foster diversity of viewpoints, helping students’ adapt to changing demographics, economic conditions, increased globalization, and encouraging them to consider their roles as world citizens within the context of their local communities.

Vision Statement

The University of Utah’s Honors College is committed to academic excellence. The College offers distinctive research and intellectual opportunities for motivated and talented undergraduate students. Grounded in the liberal arts, Honors provides cutting-edge courses and innovative teaching methods to ensure that students achieve their highest academic potential.

Statement of Purpose

The Honors mission of excellence in teaching, learning and research is fully embodied in its students. Providing financial support in the form of stipends, scholarships and fellowships is critical to cultivate and support the academic talents of our most gifted students. The Robert Whitman Award would recognize the exceptional intellect of an Honors undergraduate student with the highest potential to become a scholar and leader in their respective fields and community.
