College of Pharmacy Vision for the Future
The College of Pharmacy’s vision for sustaining its internationally recognized research programs is a new 150,000 square foot research facility that will bring our students and faculty back together again. Currently they are located in six different buildings that make collaboration and team-based research difficult. This new facility will be joined with Skaggs Hall by an atrium that will celebrate the legacy of Mr. L. S. Skaggs.
This new building will provide space for research programs in drug discovery, drug delivery, pharmacology and toxicology, and pharmacotherapy outcomes. In addition, space will be available for the Utah Poison Control Center, a computer modeling and visualization area, offices, and conference rooms.
The college is well known for developing new medicines and medical technologies to treat diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, arthritis, and wound healing, The college also contributes substantially to the Utah economy via technology transfer, by providing approximately 300 high paying laboratory support positions, and by creating several start-up companies in Utah. This research building will enhance the College’s ability to contribute to the Utah economy.
The estimated cost of this project is $70M. A lead gift has been received from The ALSAM Foundation and Mr. L. S. Skaggs and approximately two-thirds of the amount needed has been raised from private donations. The near term goal is to identify gifts and pledges needed to complete the funding for this project by early spring 2010.
