Scholarship Campaign
The most significant contribution the University of Utah makes to the state, the nation and the world, is reflected in the talents, skills and accomplishments of our graduates. And yet, at a time when more than half of all new jobs require education beyond the high school level, a college degree continues to be out of reach for too many young people with incredible potential. In fact, the University of Utah provides financial support to just 41% of its students while peer institutions provide an average of 60% of their students with financial support.
Through a dedicated scholarship effort within the $1.2 billion Together We Reach campaign, we’re resolved to create more opportunity for an increased number of students.
The campaign scholarship goals include both targeted and flexible funds that support our strategic mission. The University of Utah needs to attract more top achievers while building the base of support for students with financial need. Your gift for scholarships now will advance both the quality and diversity of our student body.
Scholarship gifts are among the most potentially satisfying a donor can make by transforming the life of a young person. By adding your name or honoring someone else through a scholarship endowment, you create a lasting legacy and inspire others. As important, your investment pays dividends by preparing future generations of leaders.
With your help, we can help to make sure that financial concerns are never the obstacle to a University of Utah education for a young person who aspires to excel. We must renew our commitment to build intellectual capital and nurture talent for Utah the nation and the world through scholarship gifts.
What size gifts are being requested for scholarships?
Gifts at all levels, both endowment and annual, are welcome and needed. From $25 to $125,000 or more, every gift will make a difference!
How much should I contribute to fund an annual scholarship?
A gift in the range of $1,500 to $2,500 will pay approximately one-third to one-half of the required annual tuition for a Utah resident student carrying a typical course load of 12 semester hours (tuition rates as of July 2009).
What if I can’t afford to give a gift of $1,500 or more?
There is no set minimum. Scholarships at all levels provide important recognition for students. They are a vote of confidence that can inspire and encourage students to achieve their educational goals. New annual scholarships of $500, for example, boost the ability of the University of Utah to recruit and retain students.
Can I designate a college, department, or program to receive my gift?
Yes. Your scholarship gifts can be unrestricted or to be applied to an endowed scholarship fund. Or you may designate your support for any academic area of the U or special programs such as international study, diversity, research, athletics, performance opportunities, healthcare programs, and many more.
Can I make a gift to a scholarship that already exists?
Yes. We encourage you to direct additional resources to named scholarships that have already been established at the U in honor of family members, outstanding faculty, or others. Also, if you were the recipient of a particular type of general scholarship, such as a Presidential Scholarship of National Merit Scholarship, you may wish to designate your gift for the scholarship fund that helped you.
